Portability

Portability is a feature of the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program that allows eligible families to move from the jurisdiction of one housing authority to another while continuing to receive rental assistance.

The Michigan City Housing Authority (MCHA) administers both port-in and port-out requests, helping current voucher holders who are moving into or out of the Michigan City area.

Porting In to Michigan City

If you are a voucher holder from another housing authority and are planning to relocate to Michigan City, your current housing authority will need to send your portability paperwork to MCHA. Once received, our staff will guide you through the next steps, including eligibility verification, briefings, and local housing search assistance.

Please note: All port-in applicants must comply with MCHA’s income limits, occupancy standards, and administrative policies.

Porting Out of Michigan City

If you currently have a voucher through MCHA and wish to move to a new city or state, you may request to port out. To begin the process:

  1. Contact your MCHA housing specialist to notify them of your intent to move.
  2. Provide the name and contact information of the receiving housing authority.
  3. Ensure that your household is in good standing and up to date on all program requirements.

Once approved, MCHA will send your portability documents to the receiving agency and assist in transitioning your voucher.
