Conventional Housing Program

The MCHA offers quality, market-rate rental housing through our Conventional Housing Program. These units are available to individuals and families who may not qualify for income-based assistance but still seek affordable, well-maintained housing options within the community. With convenient locations and access to local resources, our conventional units are ideal for working households looking for stability without the need for a voucher.

How the Program Works

The Conventional Housing Program is designed for individuals and families seeking affordable rental housing without the need for a voucher or income-based application process. Units are owned and professionally managed by the Michigan City Housing Authority and are open to anyone who meets standard leasing requirements. Rent is determined by current market rates, and all applicants undergo a standard screening process, which includes income verification, rental history, and a background check.

NOTE: This program offers flexibility, convenience, and access to housing in desirable Michigan City neighborhoods, without needing to be on a waitlist or qualify for subsidy programs.

How To Apply

All applications for Michigan City Housing Authority (MCHA) housing programs must be submitted online through our secure PHA-Web Applicant Portal. Follow these simple steps to apply for housing through the Michigan City Housing Authority:

1

Start Your Online Application

Visit the PHA-Web Applicant Portal to begin your application. You’ll need an email address and basic household information to get started.

2

Submit Your Application

Complete all required fields and review your information carefully before submitting. Once submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation number.

Note: One application per household. Submitting an application does not guarantee housing.

3

Waiting list Placement

If you meet eligibility requirements, you’ll be placed on a waiting list based on program availability, local preferences, and the date and time of your submission.

4

Keep Your Info Updated

It’s your responsibility to notify MCHA of any changes, like your name, address, phone number, income, or family size, within 10 business days. You can do this through PHA-Web (preferred) or by contacting our office.

5

Wait for Notification

MCHA will contact you by mail or email when your name moves to the top of the list or if we need to update your information. Be sure to check your mail and inbox regularly.
