Find the Right Housing Program for Your Needs

The MCHA operates multiple housing programs, including Public Housing, Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), and Market Rate Housing. Public Housing units are owned and managed by MCHA and offered to qualified applicants at reduced rent. The Housing Choice Voucher program provides rental assistance for privately owned homes, allowing eligible residents to pay only 30% of their income toward rent. Your Step-by-Step Guide to Applying

The Michigan City Housing Authority (MCHA) offers a variety of housing assistance programs to serve low-income families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities in the Michigan City area. Housing options include public housing units, privately-owned rental properties with voucher support, and market-rate housing.

If you’re interested in applying for rental assistance, check the status of our housing program waiting lists. When a waitlist is open, eligible residents can begin the application process online. Submitting an application does not guarantee immediate housing. Applicants must meet program eligibility and wait for availability.

1

Check Waiting List Status

Before applying, find out if the waitlist for the program you’re interested in is currently open. Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) and Public Housing programs often have limited availability.

2

Review Program Requirements

Make sure you meet the income, residency, and eligibility requirements for the specific housing program. Each program has different guidelines based on household size and income level.

3

Submit an Application

If the waitlist is open, you can complete your housing application online. The process is secure, mobile-friendly, and typically takes just a few minutes.

4

Monitor Your Status

After applying, you can track your application or update your details using our secure applicant portal.

Voucher Portability: How Transfers Work

Portability allows eligible Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) participants to transfer their rental assistance to another city or state. If you have a voucher with the Michigan City Housing Authority (MCHA), you may request to “port out” to a different housing authority. Likewise, if you’re moving to Michigan City with a voucher from another agency, MCHA can help you transfer your assistance here.

To start a portability transfer, contact your MCHA caseworker and provide the receiving housing authority’s contact information. You must be in good standing with your current lease and program rules.
